Coupe Absinthe Glasses: Set of 2
Coupe Absinthe Glasses: Set of 2
Antique Reproduction Absinthe Bar Glasses from the 1800's.
These reproduction glasses are among the most interesting antique absinthe glasses. Although they resemble French champagne glasses, this style was originally made specifically for use with absinthe.
These Coupe absinthe glasses are made in the same proportions as the original glasses, including their reservoir. The reservoir is the area used to measure the amount of absinthe to be used. It was intended to aid the bartender in a bar setting by knowing the correct amount of absinthe to pour, and it helped the customer know it was an honest pour. The reservoir size generally correlates with the size of the glass being used. The reservoir measures 25 ml (.8 oz), the standard amount for an absinthe glass of this size. The ratio of water to absinthe depends on the preparer's preference but is typically 1 part absinthe to 3 - 5 parts water.
Instructions: An absinthe spoon is laid over the rim of the glass containing a dose of absinthe, and a sugar cube is placed atop the spoon. Cold water is slowly poured or dripped from a fountain or carafe onto the piece of sugar. The sugary water falls from the spoon into the glass, mixing with the absinthe, releasing essential oils and perfuming the air with the smell of anise, fennel, and grande wormwood. The combination of the water and anise also turns the absinthe milky white.
